Education and wands

Yes, I KNOW that it takes effort and some hard work when you want to learn something new.
I`m trying to learn Polish, so don`t tell ME anything. Come on, say:
Czy moglaby pani mi prosze przytrzymac drzwi?
Meaning, Could the lady please hold the door open for me? A question which you should understand when you are asked, lest you appear impolite!

But when you enter my magic schoolroom (which happens to be our lovely pavillion in the back of our garden), you will find my supernatural  wand on the table. My most essential equipment!
It was easy to make, out of a stick, the dried beard of a dwarf (no, not really, just something from a corn cob), and a golden star.
But it has all the power it needs to make children curious and willing to study!
I have little helpers in form of the Mr. Men.
The children love them.

The idea for the wand I got from this book, where the witch also has one.
She doesn`t really need it, because she has her broomstick to travel on, her cat to accompany her, and her cauldron to make good soup in. She could be all satisfied with her life.
On her trips through the sky she gains NEW friends, though, and they help her to scare the dragon away. A book full of wisdom!!
And when I teach children, I use this wisdom.

I create a place in which they feel sheltered. I treat them like my friends. When they make a mistake, we laugh it off. They are ENCOURAGED to make mistakes! How else should they learn?

This mixture of soberness and magic, the belief that I can heal their injuries at school with my wand and with my laughter, that makes the children feel at ease. And suddenly their heads are free again to allow new thoughts in. When I turn to them casually and ask them a question in English, they answer me! Without even noticing.
Children really WANT to learn, I am convinced of that. But in our eagerness to teach them OUR outlook on life, our ideas of what is right and wrong and useful, we sometimes forget that each child should find their own answers.
They are living in a new world. It is changing every day. Things that we learned as children are sometimes not even true anymore, or heavily outdated.
So should we not be patient with children, ask them questions to ponder about instead of making them learn our answers?
Mandy from FireByrd is approaching a new grip on teachers, you can read it in her blog.
Janet from Under the Blood Red Sky works for Walks in the Wilderness and is showing neglected children their own nature habitat. Lori  from Lori times Five is teaching knitting to children and grown-ups.
And all of us who bring up children, we know how children ought to be treated.

WHY, I ask, do our schools not understand this?

Dear teachers everywhere, you are not too old to change your ways.
See, I am trying to learn something new, too.
I wonder if I`ll ever manage to make a SECOND one, but at least I am trying hard with a first!
Please, teachers and educators, don`t make children feel small and stupid. Make them feel eager and ambitious and proud!
Go get yourselves a wand. It is easy to make! And it will change the atmosphere in your classroom.
My best wishes to you.
Angela

The more advanced our schools become, the more backward they seem in so many ways. I often think they don't put the students first.

Oh Geli.
That is so beautiful, and encouraging for us parents too. Knowing that there are magic educators, perfectly satisfied and that treat our kids like friends and not stupid little people is a blessing.

I love you,
Lola

Trouble is we all get so bogged down with our own stuff, whether pressure to teach a curriculum or personal issues, that it sometimes gets forgotten that children respond to magic learning far better than most things. I wish I could transport you over here Geli and take you to the school that started the ball rolling round here regarding mental health and wellbeing. The headteacher is just inspirational. Her school a joy to go into. Everywhere is decorated with furry friends, streamers balloons and any amount of magical stuff. If I child does well or is sad they get to go to her room and choose a small special bear to congratulate them or hold on to whilst it's tough. They have to take them home to live with. As she walks round her school she is like the Pied Piper with children clambering to hug her. If I had ever had the start her children are getting I wouldn't be trying to make it right now. I would just have always believed in myself. And all this love pours out of her and into everyone else who enters her magical realm.I just love going to visit her she gives teaching a fantastic name. But of course to some she is just seen as flakey and ridiculous, they with their bare corridors and lack of love. I know which school I like best.

Carol, exactly! The children should always be put first, not the curriculum or the well-being of the school organisators. I wish the teachers would have to sign a pledge to do just this!!

Lola, sweetie, that is what I wish for your son next year (I`ll write it on my magic paper) - teachers who will inspire and encourage him and will make him glow with pride when he achieved to comprehend something. You will certainly help him, I know that. But what about children who have loveless parents?

Mandy, that would be my school! I am so glad that there are real head teachers who have UNDERSTOOD! And I am also happy to know that you are a part of this school and the work that is done. You will be a great addition, and very soon the press will take notice, and all the other schools will see how GOOD this works! And THEN you`ll be part of this magic. I am proud of you!

If only all teachers were trained to inspire children, I know it works I have seen and the opposite treatment also discourages them for life!

yet another beautiful post about the power of teaching our young ones. if only all teachers had the wisdom and compassion you do, geli. may all teachers be given magic (and beautifully crooked!) wands to help them in this important job.

such a cute bootie! i love that book "room on a broom" and used to read it at halloween time to my first grade students. you're a wonderful teacher it sounds like and your students are lucky to have you. i love adding a little magic in the classroom!

LindyLou, I still can`t comment on yours but will be getting a new notebook soon. Maybe then? Thank you for so faithfully coming. And yes, I also remember my bad teachers as frightful beings, and the few good ones as inspiring and worth remembering. The children should be allowed to evaluate them!! (is that a word?)

Amanda, haha, yes, I chose the crooked one because that`s part of the idea! That you noticed shows me you get it! Are you back home? Then I`ll write you a long mail later!

Anushka, thank you for your great help about knitting in English/German. My first bootie is finished now, but I wonder if I`ll manage a second!
I read your post about the Montessori school, so I think you have the same ideas as me.
The authors of Room on the Broom have written more books together, each one just as lovely, The Snail and the Whale, The Gruffalo... Do you know them, too?

I've got a picture! And what's more, I've got a new blog. The other one is still off-line, and after long & hard mourning, I set up another one. The title may not sound all that original, I'm aware of that, but it's only ad interim. But the picture stays! (Let's see if it works at all... ) Hey Angela! Swing that wand & do your magic!
