Do I have a destiny? But what if...

Sometimes we wonder, don`t we, if there is a plan to our lives. Do we have a destiny, tasks to fulfill, people to meet, roles to play? Were we MEANT to be someone?

But what if we never meet the people we should have, because we never travelled, or never found out what we should have achieved, and can`t think of a lasting deed we have done?
Is our life then wasted? And what about our free will? If we just did not FEEL like achieving anything?
Look at that young tree up there. Full of promises. Young. Healthy. Willing to grow.
And in the background the one that has already lived a while. It was clipped, cut at its ends. Not half as tall and wide as it could have been.
Is that what life does to us (gardeners, in this case)?

My father used to proclaim that children ought to be treated like plants, and be cut short, so that they grow strong.
Well, he was brought up in Nazi-Germany where that was the ideology.
I always felt strangely out of place in my family.
They said I was too delicate, I should adjust and be quiet.
But in my fantasy I was somewhere else, doing other things than I was expected to do.
Was I trying to follow "my own secret star"?
But I knew not what or where it was, and I did not dare to follow it, even if it had been clearer to me what it was.
Now that I am much older and look back, I am amazed at how things worked together to make me the one I am now. How so many of my dreams were fulfilled, but also how sometimes my route took funny turnings. Der Mensch denkt, Gott lenkt, is a wise German saying.
Man thinks, but God leads.
Is it God? Karma? The Universe? Or no one at all? Are we just taking decisions along the way and have to face the consequences?
Well, I think that every human life is a unique piece of art. Even if we sit on a chair most of our lives, contemplating, looking out of the window... we are still part of the breathing, thinking earth. Our main destiny is only to LIVE.
What we make of it has to do with our talents, our wishes, circumstances, and often the strangest, funniest coincidences! (I can tell you lots from my own life). But mainly it has to do with what we WANT our lives to be.

Here is a house whose picture I took this morning.
Look how pretty and cared-for and freshly coloures it looks.

And here is the SAME house, two years ago.It was shattered, neglected, looking fit for being torn down.
But then somebody looked at it and loved it, and was kind to it, and now it has pride again.
So, you see what I mean?

There are roads we walk, with crossings which can lead us either way. We are able to swim rivers, climb up the other side, or take a boat and float down with the stream, that is all up to us. But if we have picture of how we WANT things to be,
we can walk through strange doors, and encounter whatever is behind that door. And we will make the things happen which we want to have in our lives.
I think it is good if we have a beautiful, kind, spirited picture of ourselves. Then, no matter how it started, or what trials it brought us, at the end we can say,
It was a good life.

A very philosophical post, Angela.

Man supposes and God disposes is the equivalent to the German saying I have heard in England.

I am not sure that we can really influence our lives at every turn; sure, we can have an idea of where we want to end up, but getting there doesn't always work. You'd have to be very single-minded and determined. It is so much easier to drift. And sometimes we go wrong and can't be bothered to go right again. And then we're stuck.

Or we have commitments and duties we can't get out of. And sometimes we prefer the easy way out. Every decision or lack of decision has a consequence.

I think a bit of balance is good, don't drift mindlessly but don't push too hard either. And definitely try to be good and kind and friendly and considerate.

And if we fail we'll just have to try again.

I don't know if I believe in fate. It's a big question.

Man thinks, but God leads. That is very wise, thanks for that.

I do think each of us has a soul purpose and that we do,what we can in life to fulfill it.

It's hard to imagine you as delicate. Every story about your father frightens me. You followed your beautiful spirit - thank goodness! Xx

Hi,
Proverbs 19:21 says, "Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails."

It is natural and good for us to make plans and to have dreams to chase but it is probably wise to realise that we really have no absolute control of our lives. We may plan but our plans can be overturned by an illness or an accident over which we have no control. It is in God's hands. But I do believe that God does lead us and prod us in the right direction for our lives (those "coincidences" and "circumstances" that help shape us). The only thing we control is our own choices.

There is another saying that goes, "who we are is God's gift to us; who we become is our response to God."

Thanks for coming by my blog.

I often wonder what the purpose of my life is. People tell me I think too much, but I put that down to them not thinking about their own purpose.

Whatever Life and The Universe plans for me, I simply want to enjoy it to the fullest - my fullest!

I do believe you meet the people you are meant to meet (even if you don't travel - look at what we do in blogland) and I fully agree with Reya that we do what we can to fulfill our purpose. I like Friko's comment on balance too.

I was listening to a speech last given at the prize giving at school. The last point the speaker made was this.... We should go through our lives being ourselves only better.
A sentiment I agree with. We may not know where we are going, but on the journey we should be our best selves to get there and appreciate and learn from the journey.

I enjoyed reading your philosophical post and the comments. I am not sure that we don’t have control over our lives and that a supernatural power has – I think people feel that they are not really free because they are limited by their beliefs and their thoughts – they place limits to their dreams. “Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.” Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. Have a great 2012!

Wow, I love all your comments, my philosophical friends!

Friko, I like that idea of balance, too.
I think in a way we are already destined to become someone "special" at birth. My daughters were both so different, and remained that way, with their first scream. But they had their own experiences which made them to the adult persons they now are. Was I able to help them? Should they have found out things for themselves? Would they have ended up with the same personality, no matter?
I don`t know. But I think it is good to get in touch with that "self" at an early age, so we live accordingly. It saves us unnecessary unhappiness.
And I think we are here to be happy.

Reya, I like your last posts! And yes, they made me remember my own upbringing... I wish I had known "myself" earlier and could have challenged my father`s ideas about child education (and others), but you need a lot of self-confidence and must probably learn it during your lifetime. You wonder why you had to go through that false marriage? You probably learned in this time more about yourself than you would have otherwise.

Squirrel, I love that saying you mentioned. My response to God.
And yes, I was always amazed at the "pushing" I sometimes got, those coincidences were, looking back, just the "right" decisions on my chosen lane (the one I had chosen as a child, opposite to what my parents had planned for me).

Janet, I fullheartedly agree to your credo that you want to ENJOY your life. I think this is exactly our purpose. We are not here to be miserable but to be happy. And whatever life brings us, good or bad, (and I know yours was not always easy), if we run back towards the light, we are on the right track.

Mandy, I know you are wise and have understood this. I love your self-helping book!

Vagabonde, Marc Aurel, huh? Such a long time ago, and he already knew. I think you made such a great journey of your life, with so many turns, and such amazing experiences, that you must have had a very bright guiding star!
I always love to hear from you!

Happy New Year to all of you!

I loved your post, Geli. Some people's purpose is just to make others happy with their very breathing. :)

I really like your thoughts in this post.

I think we have an overall plan for our lives. But within that plan we have almost total free will.

And I think we don't know where one ends and the other begins.

Amanda hat gesagt…

i sometimes think people feel way too pressured to achieve or accomplish something in their lives and overlook what the sages tell us: to just enjoy life. we carry so much guilt and other unnecessary emotions that block our ability to do just that.

yet another thought provoking post geli - if more of us focused on enjoying the beauty all around us instead of trying to gain power over one another, the world would be a better place.

man thinks and god leads......(woman thinks and goddess leads ;-) so true.

love and hugs,

amanda

Natsy, yes, isn`t that a nice thought? Like an angel`s touch, with a soft hand or feather, a smile and a breathed blessing, no more.

Carol, I like the free-will-idea, too. But some brain researchers doubt it and say we are guided by our subconscious mind. Very interesting, this whole subject. I am just reading a book called, Who am I, and if so, how many? I might write more about that later.

Amanda, in German the word for "mankind" or "human" is "Mensch", which is not using gender. It can be both, which I like better.
Do you remember the Pope John Paul the first, the one who died after 30 days in Office? (unclear circumstances). He said I imagine God as male and female, as mother and father. But alas, before he could talk about this longer, he was taken away...

My credo is that if everybody looks after his or her own happiness, without envy or guilt or anger, using his or her talents to gain joy and perhaps an income from them, life would be lovely. But then, we have our old reptile brain parts. Will we ever learn to overcome them?

I think the picture of the house says it all. There are always choices, but you have to work with what you have.

It's probably the only way to achieve contentment, or even happiness.

I agree with Friko that we can't influence our lives that much - there is always the banana skin waiting or the lotteryticket to be won. But we CAN decide what we want our lives to be, and our selves to be.

Thanks for dropping by at my blog, nice to hear from you!
